Rocket From The Tombs - The Day The Earth Met...

Very possibly my favorite punk band of all time. Not definitely, but definitely possible. Rocket from the Tombs never came out with any cd's before this, but played shows in the seventies, and actually got back together for a brief stint in 2003, when this album was released, and again in 2006. This is not an official studio release of new songs, but a compilation of demo recordings, live preformances, and so on. Tracks like So Cold and Ain't It Fun are just some the best "fuck you" or "I don't care" songs i've ever heard... RFTT is a personal favorite of mine, and I'm simply delighted to share them with you. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

JFA - Blatant Localism

I started listening to JFA when I was around 15...8th or 9th grade probably. Unfortunately, I can't remember how I found out about them...I want to say I heard them playing in a record store, but I'm not sure. But that's not so important.
JFA (Jodie Foster's Army) are a hard-core-skate-punk that formed in '81. The band's name is a sort of tastelessly awesome homage to the attempted assassination of former president Ronald Reagan (who seemed to be on par with Hitler for most punks of the time). John Hinckley Jr., Reagan's would-be assassin, who had a sick obsession with Jodie Foster, thought, for some strange reason, that killing the president and becoming a national celebrity would somehow impress Foster. Hinckley's plan kind of back-fired in that: 1)he did not kill the president 2)he did not impress Jodie Foster, and 3)he is still in a psych-hospital.
A'right now, enough with the history lesson. The music here is fast, abrasive, and charmingly pissed-off. There are less politically-tinged lyrics than you'd expect. In the end, you can tell that these guys just wanted to drink beer, skate, and play some great music.

Melt Banana - Cell-Scape

Melt Banana seems to be one of those bands that polarizes its listeners. You hear them, and within about 10-15 seconds will be able to make a judgment, which usually falls under one of two view-points: 1)Melt Banana is a highly original and energetic band that you just can't get enough of, or 2) people actually listen to this shit? I, obviously, adhere to the former. The music here is fucking crazy, I will say this right out. The singer is a Japanese girl with a really high voice who squeaks over distorted nasty guitar lines, funky bass lines, and frantic I can't beat the shit out of these drums hard enough drumming. And although I am not always in the mood for Melt Banana, when I am, I want to hear nothing else. Highly recommended, especially to those of you who liked OOIOO. Oh, I almost forgot, Melt Banana's singer normally sings a lot higher than what most would call her natural singing voice. If you wanna see what she sounds like singing 'normally', put on track 9, If It Is The Deep Sea, I Can See You There.

Black Flag - Damaged

I know it’s not really rare or obscure… but come on, this album kicks ass. This was Black Flag’s first lp and is essential punk. Get it! (Also, Black Flag is played in the episode of Freaks and Geeks when James Franco tries to go punk) Oh, and I almost forgot to mention the album cover. It’s awesome.

Thee Mighty Caesars - Caesar's Remains

Continuing with this punk theme from The Urinals, we have here Thee Mighty Caesars' Caesar's Remains. The album is a compilation of songs from 1985-1992, The band was formed by Billy Childish (real name Steven John Hamper, heh), an awesome artist of many mediums. The Mighty Caesars came to be after the end of Hamper's previous band, Thee Milkshakes. They've been described as punk, I think the word garage should be in the label, 'cause that to me is the closest you get to describing this band. Maybe garage-punk? What? I don't know. Regardless, It's a great cd, I recommend checkin' it out. Cadalina gets me goin'.

Urinals - Negative Capability... Check It Out!

I picked up Negative Capability... Check It Out! a couple of months ago when I was in New York at a pretty cool record store called Other Music. It was a total impulse buy and turned out to be a pleasant surprise. The Urinals have a very unique sound that eludes easy categorization. I can say with certainty that they are a punk rock band...THE punk rock band, maybe. The Urinals are the most raw and sloppy punk band I have ever heard. At times it almost sounds like they only learned how to play their instruments a day before they became a band. But instrumental proficiency and complex composition aren't really important when the energy is this high. You will hear songs on this cd that you have heard before, but they are so fucked up beyond all recognition that you probably won't recognize them. Exhibit A: The Jetson's Theme. There's also a great rendition of Roky Erickson's You're Gonna Miss Me, which I would say is one of the first Punk Rock songs.

So sit back, turn up your speakers, and enjoy having your eardrums blown out!
